Mel Gibson

This actor that most of us know him as has now moved on to become a producer and director of movies. So instead of standing infront of the camera he has moved behind the camera and now produces, directs movies. Apocalypto is the newest movie that he has made.
Mel Gibson is not as most of us think from Australia. He was born in Peekskill, New York here in the US. Date of birth is January 3 in 1956. So this year (2007) he is 51 years old.
In 1968 the Gibson family (Mel Gibson and 10 brothers and sisters with this father Hutton Gibson and mother Anne Reilly Gibson) moved to Australia.
After some time in different theatre companies and some small movie roles he made his breakthrough in the neverforgotten movie Mad Max. Where Mel Gibson plays the post-apolalyptic, leather-clad action hero Mad Max. After that movie Mel Gibson got the role of Tim in the movie Tim. Where he played a retarted handyman inlove.
It was for his role in Tim that he got an award from Australian Film Institute namely Best Actor award.
He was on his way to becoming an International movie star. But it would take atleast 2 more movies before he became an international movie star. Namely the movies Gallipoli aswell as Mad Max 2. Both came out in 1981. Thats over 25 years ago.
In 1982's blockbuster "The Year of Living Dangerously" Mel became a sex symbol to many womens around the world.
After that he made some movies in the US, namely "The Bounty", and "The River", "Mrs. Soffel". After that Mel Gibson returned to Australia to film his last Mad Max movie "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985). Not as raw or lowbudget as the first two movies, but just as good.
There has been rumours that Mel will make a Mad Max 4, but they has just been rumours and nothing has ever been filmed.
After Max Max beyond Thunderdome, Mel took two years of and focused on his family.
When Mel Gibson returned to the big screen, it was really big and it was in "Lethal Weapon" (1987). Where Mel plays a explosive homicide cop named Sergeant Martin Riggs. Here he teams up with his partner Danny Glover playing Sergeant Roger Murtaugh. This was a blockbuster and really propelled Mel Gibson into beeing that superstar that he has been ever after.
After the first Lethal Weapon there have been 3 more.
After a movie like that you are permitted to make some disappointing movies. And that what Mel Gibson did. The following movie "Tequila Sunrise" wasn't any good.
But Mel Gibson finished the first sequal of Lethal Weapon a year after Tequila Sunrise.
After that Mel Gibson has finished alot of movies, some beeing good and some that aren't as good. But one things for sure. Most of Mel Gibson movies has always been blockbusters and he is truely a great actor.
He did his directorial debut in the movie "The Man Without a Face" (1993). Even though it wasn't a movie that propelled him further in his superstardom, the next movie that he directed was a sure success.
"Braveheart" (1995), where he plays a 13th-century Scottish nobleman which tries to free Scotland from it's English rulers.
The picture was a huge success and the movie got five awards. Which included Best Picture, Best Directory etc.
After that what could top a carrier. Well even though some might not say that it topped the movies before. But Mel made in the year after a singing debut in Disney's movie "Pocahontas".
After 1996 there has been more really good movies which stared Mel Gibson. Such as "The Patriot", "Lethal Weapon 4", "Ransom", "What Women Want".
The next time in date of importance for Mel Gibsons carrier was in 2004, where Gibson returned to direct the movie "The Passion of Christ". Even though the religious movie created a huge debat it still made alot of money.
His latest movie that he has directed is "Apocalypto".
